America > United States > DIPLO // DIPLO![]() © D.R Diplo selects Greensleeves : Riddimentary
Philly-based DJ Diplo is a high profile JA dancehall devotee. His resumé as a producer includes remixes of artists like M.I.A., Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Madonna and Radiohead. Affirmation of Diplo’s ongoing passion for dancehall is Major Lazer - a collaboration with fellow DJ Switch which has resulted in live DJ sets and an album, recorded at Tuff Gong, featuring raw, risqué and bumpin’ collaborations with Vybz Kartel, Busy Signal, Nina Sky, Mr Vegas, Turbulence et al. However, as the curator of this mixtape-style compilation - Riddimentary – we find Diplo reflecting on his own journey of discovery and digging in the vaults of Greensleeves Records, the Shepherd’s Bush-based label that put dancehall on the international map. The opening cut of Alpha & Omega’s ‘Who Is The Ruler’ throws down the challenge. From classic UK sound system steppers we roll into the distinctive voice of Augustus Pablo protégé Hugh Mundell and the inimitable sound of the Roots Radics and Junjo Lawes – easily the most important producer of the Eighties. Just listen to John Holt’s ‘Police In Helicopter’ and Barrington Levy’s ‘Eventide Fire A Disaster’. Love the lyrics on Tristan Palma’s ‘Joker Smoker’ and who can resist the highly original offerings of Ranking Dread, Eastwood & Saint, the mighty Eek-A-Mouse and the gravel voiced Prince Far I? Diplo chops into his “mix” a Crazy Joe dub of ‘Satta…’, an uptempo cut of Gregory Isaac’s ‘Night Nurse’, JC Lodge’s rocking ‘Telephone Love’ plus a little ‘Water Pumping’ and, all told, Riddimentary adds up to an eclectic and most palatable selection.
